Power to the Kids at Mullaway Primary School with Steve the Reptile Man

Workshop Summary – Mullaway Primary School

Thank you to all the parents and children who attended our first introductory workshop at Mulloway Primary School this week on Wednesday night.

Steve McEwen and his super friendly reptiles were the clear hit of the night. Special thanks to Steve for donating his time and knowledge for us all. I don’t think any of us will forget how to use a snake bandage and stretch those rectangles to squares to get the pressure right.

Parents were able to feedback some excellent new ideas and topics we will incorporate into our workshops this year including managing grief, managing change and transitions, helping children develop self esteem, how to reduce sensitivity to criticism, managing sibling rivalry as well as our common requests for help with screens and anxiety. Feel free to keep adding ideas and giving feedback via our form on the home page.

The kids gave lots of ideas on what we could help parents with to improve their role as parents including “cook more hot dogs” and lots of entries of “spend more time with me” and “spend less time on their phones”.

Parents were invited to think about their family tree, back to their grandparents and identify 3 words to describe each individual in it, as a way of understanding context of our families of origin and where patterns may be coming from. We then got to think about what 3 words we wanted to be identified with and known as, and reminded that identity is something we have complete control of, and is recognized by our actions (not thoughts or feelings).

We are really looking forward to this journey together in 2024 and strengthening the community that is nurturing the children among us.

Next northern meeting will be at Woolgoolga Primary School on 22nd of May, topic will be managing Anxiety and building confidence and resilience in our kids.

We are excited to be expanding into the Coffs Harbour region with the support of Toormina Primary, St Augustines, Narranga and Mary Help of Christians.

If the 22nd of May is not suitable we will be running the same workshop at Toormina Primary School on the 2nd of May.

Hope to see you all at one of them. Please reach out to friends or families you feel would benefit from coming to our workshops and joining our community.
